It is the 1950s in St. Louis, Missouri where Mama Fat and her husband Popsie live in a small, rented duplex located in a working-class Black neighborhood. All her adult life, Mama Fat has dreamed of owning her own home. Mama Fat has not made Popsie privy to any of these closeted shenanigans, and when he learns about them, he separates from his wife for the first time in their long marriage. In the end, the house Mama Fat wanted is sold to someone else, Larry has an epiphany, and Popsie returns to the marriage with some demands of his own. The family learns important lessons about love and redemption.
